Zoning

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Zoning is a studio album by the pianist Mary Lou Williams, released in 1974 by Mary Records. She arranged the music herself and plays in duo and trio, mainly with bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker. The pieces vary greatly in mood: dreamy in an Ellington manner in Ghost of Love, with communal shouts in Praise the Lord, and funky in Play It Momma. In Zoning Fungus II she uses atonal harmonies before the piece settles on a steady funky bass.

The album was well received on release. Gary Giddins chose it in his Village Voice column as one of the ten best albums of the year. In 1995 Smithsonian Folkways reissued it on CD, with a different track listing and two previously unreleased recordings.

Listening
