From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill · After the break-up of the Fugees, Lauryn Hill made her first solo album in 1998. She was pregnant with her first child and wrote more than thirty songs in her attic studio in New Jersey. The recording ran from September 1997 to June 1998, first in New York and New Jersey, then at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Bob Marley's studio. She wrote and produced almost everything herself, with a group of musicians called New Ark.
It is a concept album about learning from love, with themes such as relationships, conflict, motherhood and faith. The sound is neo soul and R&B with hip hop and reggae, played with real instruments and layered harmony vocals. Doo Wop (That Thing) became a number one in the United States. The critical response was unanimously glowing, the album won Album of the Year at the Grammys and contributed to the breakthrough of hip hop and neo soul.
