The Red Shoes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Red Shoes was released on 1 November 1993 and was Kate Bush's last record before a break of twelve years. The title comes from the 1948 film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, which is based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen: a dancer can no longer take off her shoes. While making it she lost her mother and her guitarist Alan Murphy, and her long relationship with bassist Del Palmer ended.

She aimed for a live band sound, with fewer studio tricks than on earlier records. There are remarkably many guests. Prince plays and sings on Why Should I Love You?, Eric Clapton plays guitar on And So Is Love and Trio Bulgarka sings on three tracks. She also made the short film The Line, the Cross and the Curve. The album reached number two in the British chart.
