50 Words for Snow

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

50 Words for Snow · Kate Bush released this album on 21 November 2011 on her own label Fish People. It was her second record of that year, after Director's Cut, and her first entirely new material since Aerial in 2005. The seven songs are set against a background of falling snow and together last 65 minutes. Lake Tahoe and Misty are the longest songs in her work.

The music revolves around calm, jazzy piano playing and Steve Gadd's drums, with both sung and spoken voice. Snowflake opens with the high choirboy voice of her son Albert. In Wild Man, mountaineers out of compassion hide the Yeti's footprints. Elton John sings along on Snowed In at Wheeler Street, and Stephen Fry recites the title song with invented snow words. Among Angels closes as a subdued love song. The album received wide praise.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Snowflake and notice the high choirboy voice of Albert, who sings the role of the falling snowflake.
