Sarabande

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sarabande is Jon Lord's second solo album. It was recorded from 3 to 6 September 1975 at the Stadthalle in Oer-Erkenschwick, near Düsseldorf, with Dieter Dierks's mobile studio. The Philharmonia Hungarica played under the direction of Eberhard Schoener. The composer played Hammond organ, piano, clavinet and synthesizers, and was joined by, among others, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Pete York. Martin Birch mixed the recordings in Munich and produced the record together with him.

The suite has eight parts, with titles such as Fantasia, Gigue and Pavane. In Finale, the parade of themes on the record was made with tape loops. The cover shows an ouroboros, a snake biting its own tail, with three naked women on it. Not until 2010 was the whole suite performed live, in Budapest, with new orchestrations.

Listening

Listening tip. In Finale, listen to the parade of themes and try to hear which earlier pieces return.
