American Recordings · Producer Rick Rubin saw Johnny Cash perform at the concert for Bob Dylan's thirtieth anniversary in late 1992 and felt that the music industry had wrongly written the singer off. He offered him a contract at his label, which was best known for rap and heavy metal, with plenty of creative freedom. So the singer recorded the first solo album of his career, without backing musicians, with only his guitar, in his cabin in Tennessee and at Rubin's home in Los Angeles.

It is a spare album of old songs and newly written numbers. Tom Waits supplied Down There By the Train, Glenn Danzig wrote Thirteen and Nick Lowe wrote The Beast in Me. Tennessee Stud and The Man Who Couldn't Cry were recorded live at the Viper Room in Los Angeles. The critical response was almost unanimously glowing, and the album won a Grammy. It marked the beginning of a new flowering for the singer.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Down There By the Train, a gospel-style song of redemption written by Tom Waits, and notice how sparely it is delivered: one voice and an acoustic guitar.
