American IV: The Man Comes Around

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

American IV: The Man Comes Around · American IV is Johnny Cash's 67th studio album and the last to be released in his lifetime, on 5 November 2002. It is the fourth instalment of the American series, which many critics consider his best work of his final years. Rick Rubin produced. Cash was seriously ill and almost blind, and the recording was interrupted by hospital admissions.

Most of the songs are covers, which he plays in his own stripped-down way. For Personal Jesus, Rubin asked guitarist John Frusciante to make an acoustic version, which gave the song a bluesy feel. Hurt was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails; he later said the song was no longer his. Guests such as Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Don Henley sing along. The album was named Album of the Year at the 2003 CMA Awards and was Cash's first album in thirty years to go gold.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hurt and notice how little sounds besides his voice and the acoustic accompaniment.
