The Academy in Peril

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Academy in Peril is the second solo album by the Welsh musician John Cale and was released on 19 July 1972 on Reprise Records. Like his previous record, Church of Anthrax with Terry Riley, it is largely instrumental. The title refers to Cale's classical training, and you can hear that in the pieces. Cale himself plays bass, guitar, keyboards and viola. Adam Miller sings, Del Newman plays drums and Ron Wood plays slide guitar on The Philosopher.

In Legs Larry at Television Centre, Legs Larry Smith reads a text aloud. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra plays on 3 Orchestral Pieces and on John Milton. Andy Warhol conceived and made the cover. The song Days of Steam was released as a single in New Zealand. AllMusic later wrote that the record strikes an unexpectedly pleasing and often engrossing balance between classical and rock, without the worst hybrids of the time.
