Fordlândia
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Fordlândia is the sixth studio album by the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and was released on 3 November 2008 on 4AD, after IBM 1401, A User's Manual from 2006. The album revolves around the idea of a failed utopia. In the 1920s Henry Ford established a rubber plantation in the Amazon, complete with American small towns, hamburgers and prohibition. The Brazilian workers rebelled, and no rubber was ever produced for Ford's car tyres.
Jóhannsson wrote, arranged and produced everything himself. He plays piano, organ, guitar and electronics. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus plays on four tracks, and there are also strings, clarinet, pipe organ and percussion. The short Melodia pieces run through the record like a thread. Recording took place in Prague, Drammen and Reykjavík. Vaughan Oliver of v23 designed the cover.
