Tangents in Jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tangents in Jazz is Jimmy Giuffre's second album and was released on Capitol. The recording took place in June 1955 at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, in three sessions. Giuffre played clarinet, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone. He was accompanied by the trumpeter Jack Sheldon, the bassist Ralph Peña and the drummer Artie Anton. There is no piano, which keeps the sound open and light.

Giuffre wrote nine of the ten tracks himself. Only This Is My Beloved is by Vernon Duke. Four short pieces are called Scintilla and run like a thread through the record. According to AllMusic's overview, the emphasis is on a Cool Jazz tone and relaxed improvisation, with hints of folk music, but sounding very modern for its time.

Listening

Listening tip. In Scintilla I, the shortest track, listen to the relaxed, light tone of the horns, and then compare that with Scintilla II.
