Emergency on Planet Earth

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Emergency on Planet Earth is Jamiroquai's debut album and was released in June 1993. It began with When You Gonna Learn, the track with which Jay Kay made his debut on Acid Jazz Records in 1992 and which earned him a contract with Sony. When he fell out with his producer over the recording, he realised that he wanted a real live band. This is how the group around the bassist Stuart Zender, the keyboard player Toby Smith and the didgeridoo player Wallis Buchanan came into being.

The sound rests on 1970s acid jazz, funk and soul, with rich arrangements and socially engaged lyrics about, among other things, the environment and war. Too Young to Die became a British top ten hit. Kay wrote it with Smith. Revolution 1993 lasts ten minutes and Didgin' Out closes the record. The album reached number one in the United Kingdom, and Q called it a contender for the best British soul album of the 1990s.
