Somewhere in Time · After the exhausting World Slavery Tour of 1984 and 1985, which lasted 331 days, the band was given four months' rest. The guitarists and the bassist used that time to experiment with new equipment. The result was a different sound: for the first time, guitar and bass synthesizers were used. The singer Bruce Dickinson wrote nothing this time, because his songs were rejected. It is precisely the tracks by the guitarist Adrian Smith that stand out.
The recording was expensive and spread across three countries: bass and drums in the Bahamas, guitars and vocals in Hilversum, the mix in New York. Themes such as space and time recur, although the band did not intend a concept album. Caught Somewhere in Time is narrated by the devil, Wasted Years is about homesickness while touring. The reviews were mostly positive, and Metal Hammer called it the most underrated Iron Maiden album of the 1980s.
