Killers

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Killers is Iron Maiden's second studio album, released on 16 February 1981 on EMI. It was the first with the guitarist Adrian Smith and the producer Martin Birch, and the last with the singer Paul Di'Anno. Steve Harris wrote almost everything. Many of the songs date from the years before the debut: Wrathchild and Innocent Exile are among the first songs Harris ever wrote. Murders In the Rue Morgue is based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, and it is the band's only album with two instrumentals. According to Harris, the production was very different from that of the debut.

The first reactions were mixed, and Sounds gave it one star. Later the record gained more appreciation. Steve Huey of AllMusic called the guitar duo of Smith and Dave Murray the strongest in heavy metal, and Metal Hammer saw the album as an important transition to what came next.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Wrathchild and follow Steve Harris's bass line: on this album the bass and the guitar duo are clearly audible in the mix.
