Grrr

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Grrr is Hugh Masekela's second studio album. It was recorded in New York and released in 1966 on Mercury Records. Ed Townsend produced. Masekela arranged nine of the ten tracks and Jonas Gwangwa one. They are short instrumental pieces in which jazz meets mbaqanga, the rhythmically complex South African music.

Some of the accompaniment is not credited on the sleeve: in his autobiography Masekela names, among others, Eric Gale on guitar, Larry Willis on piano, Morris Goldberg on saxophone and Howard St. John on tuba. A reviewer for Dusty Groove wrote that the sound is less polished than on later hits, with sparse tracks, dancing piano lines and a raw, soulful trumpet.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ntjilo Ntjilo and notice how the trumpet plays over the sparse accompaniment.
