Combo!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Combo! is Henry Mancini's seventh studio album for RCA Victor. The album was recorded in Hollywood in June 1960 but was not released until early 1962. The sleeve notes argued that the small band, the combo, is too often forgotten in the golden decade of music from 1935 to 1945. The record aims to honour those ensembles with fresh jazz, partly written and partly improvised.

His task as arranger was to make eleven players sound like a full orchestra. He also used a harpsichord for a fresh sound. The players include Pete Candoli, Art Pepper and Shelly Manne. Billboard saw the album as a salute to the great pop combos of the past, with arrangements that swing.

Listening tip. Listen to Tequila and notice how big a sound eleven players can make together.
