The Talented Touch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Talented Touch is an album by the pianist Hank Jones, recorded in 1958 for the Capitol label. He plays in a quartet with the guitarist Barry Galbraith, the bassist Milt Hinton and the drummer Osie Johnson. The programme consists mostly of well-known songs, including by Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter, and one original piece, Let Me Know. The pieces are short: none lasts much longer than three and a half minutes.

AllMusic gave the album three and a half stars and wrote that musicians of this calibre can say a great deal in so little time. JazzTimes praised the elegant finish and found it a pleasant, reassuring piano album to put on after a hard day's work, although the caution makes the session less essential.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to My One and Only Love and notice how the pianist plays the melody straight and only adds soft, tinkling embellishments.
