Bee Thousand
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bee Thousand · Guided by Voices from Dayton, Ohio, was not a band in the usual sense: whichever of a group of friends had time played along. In 1993 Robert Pollard was on the point of disbanding the group, because of lack of money and because he wanted to look after his family and his work as a teacher more. Then he thought of taking old, unused material apart and rebuilding it into new songs. The record was released in June 1994 on Scat Records.
The recording was done not in a studio but on simple equipment in garages and basements, in three days. That led to mistakes: in Hardcore UFO's the guitar drops out for a moment. The band came to like the sound precisely for that. The music draws its influence from British beat, punk and psychedelia, with surrealist lyrics. After this record the group grew into one of the best-known names in lo-fi. Other labels showed interest.
