Paris Blues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Paris Blues is a duo album by the pianist Gil Evans and the saxophonist Steve Lacy, recorded in Paris in 1987 and released on the French label Owl. It was Evans's last studio recording before his death in 1988. In the United States it did not appear until 2003, on Sunnyside Records.

Evans plays piano and electric piano, Lacy soprano saxophone. The repertoire consists of pieces by Charles Mingus, such as Reincarnation of a Lovebird and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, Duke Ellington's Paris Blues and Lacy's own Esteem. The longest piece lasts almost fifteen minutes. The reviews were moderate. Scott Yanow felt that the pianist mostly prompted and accompanied with melodies, and The Penguin Guide to Jazz called the result light and agreeable.

Listening tip. Listen to Duke Ellington's Paris Blues and notice how piano and soprano saxophone respond to each other in a duet.
