Free Your Mind… and Your Ass Will Follow
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Free Your Mind… and Your Ass Will Follow is Funkadelic's second studio album and was released on 20 July 1970 on Westbound Records. The band recorded it in Detroit, at United Sound Studios, Audio Graphic Services and G-M Recording Studios. George Clinton said he wanted to see whether they could record an entire album with everyone on LSD.
The title song is full of feedback and takes up a third of the running time. The piece describes a mystical road to redemption: free your mind, and the rest will follow. Several other songs, including Eulogy and Light, play with Christian texts such as the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23 and mock capitalism. The record reached number 92 on the American pop chart, and I Wanna Know If It's Good to You? became a single. Critics were divided. Robert Christgau thought Funky Dollar Bill the most successful, while AllMusic praised the record as an album of songs ranging from good to stunningly good.
