The Marshall Mathers LP 2
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is a sequel to Eminem's third album. The idea arose when, at an early stage, he recorded a handful of songs that reminded him of his earlier work. He wanted to experiment with retro sounds from turntablism, such as break beats and scratches, and asked Rick Rubin to take that further. Dr. Dre was executive producer.
The album draws on arena rock and old-school hip hop and sounds more minimalist than earlier records. Berzerk honours the hip hop of old with samples of the Beastie Boys and Billy Squier. In Rap God he raps over an instrumental with EDM influences and changing flows, and closes by asking why you would be king if you can be god. The Monster, with Rihanna, became an American number one. Critics praised the rapping skill and the production. The album won the Grammy for Best Rap Album.
