Madman Across the Water

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Madman Across the Water was released on 5 November 1971 and was Elton John's third album of that year. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. His own band played on only one track, because producer Gus Dudgeon did not trust the group for studio work. In their place came studio musicians and string arrangements by Paul Buckmaster. Davey Johnstone played guitar and Rick Wakeman of Yes played Hammond organ on two tracks.

The title song was first intended for Tumbleweed Connection but was re-recorded. Singles were Levon and Tiny Dancer. In the United Kingdom the record did modestly, at number 41, but in North America it did much better. Rolling Stone found the lyrics confusing and the record at times impenetrably dense.
