Down by the Jetty

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Down by the Jetty is the debut album of the English band Dr. Feelgood and was released in January 1975. Vic Maile produced the record. The group, built around the singer Lee Brilleaux and the guitarist Wilko Johnson, plays original songs influenced by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, such as Keep It Out of Sight, and also covers such as Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker. Johnson himself wrote almost all the other songs. In 2006 an expanded reissue appeared.

The record had a long afterlife. Paul Weller and Bob Geldof cite it as an influence, and Blondie, the Ramones and Richard Hell also knew it. Weller's band The Jam recorded a demo of Cheque Book in 1976, before it had a contract. In 2006 the magazine Uncut placed the album at number 87 among the best debut albums.
