Brothers in Arms

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Recording of Brothers in Arms began on 2 November 1984 at AIR Studios on the island of Montserrat. The singer and guitarist Mark Knopfler had written all the songs and produced the record together with Neil Dorfsman. It was one of the first albums recorded on a digital 24-track machine. The guitarist Hal Lindes left the band early in the sessions, after which Knopfler himself played the majority of the guitar parts.

In Money for Nothing his guitar acquired a striking sound, possibly because of the unusual placement of the microphones. The album was released on 17 May 1985 and was the first album to sell more than a million copies on CD. It stayed at the top of the charts in England, America and Australia for months. The record won a Grammy for best engineering and a Brit Award for best British album.

Listening tip. Listen to Money for Nothing and notice the sound of the guitar at the start of the song. This is the sound Mark Knopfler was looking for in the studio.
