Basie Plays Hefti

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Basie Plays Hefti was released in 1958 on the Roulette label. On this album Count Basie's orchestra plays exclusively compositions and arrangements by Neal Hefti. The bandleader, Hefti and producer Teddy Reig had already worked together six months earlier on the album E=MC2. The bandleader himself plays piano.

All eleven pieces are by Hefti, among them Cute, Pensive Miss and Count Down. The orchestra includes trumpeters such as Thad Jones, Joe Newman and Snooky Young, trombonist Al Grey, saxophonists Frank Wess and Frank Foster, guitarist Freddie Green and drummer Sonny Payne. AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars and wrote that the orchestra was in top form.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cute and notice how the orchestra plays as one large whole, with the horns set against the rhythm section.
