Mylo Xyloto

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mylo Xyloto is Coldplay's fifth studio album, released in October 2011 by Parlophone. The band worked once again with producer Brian Eno, after Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. They recorded at The Bakery and at a new studio in London, The Beehive. At first they worked on two records, a restrained acoustic one and an electric one, but in the end it became a single album. Charlie Brown began as an acoustic song and took on a new form. Us Against the World and U.F.O. stayed understated.

It is their first concept album, a love story in an oppressed city, inspired by graffiti. The sound is more electronic and it opens with Hurts Like Heaven. Critics praised the optimistic tone, but some found it bombastic. Paradise and Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall received Grammy nominations.

Listening tip. Listen to Hurts Like Heaven and notice the electronic sounds and the processed vocals with which the album opens.
