South of the Border
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
South of the Border was released in 1952 on Mercury Records as a 10-inch LP. In 1995 an expanded CD version appeared on Verve, and all the tracks are also on the Verve box set Bird: The Complete Charlie Parker on Verve. Here the saxophonist plays in a Latin American setting, with, among others, Machito and his orchestra.
According to AllMusic his improvisational style barely changed. He played his lightning-fast bop phrases over congas and bongos, and they fitted the grooves almost effortlessly. He did, however, adapt his phrasing of the melodies to the rhythms. The Penguin Guide to Jazz thought it was time to put an end to the snobbery surrounding these fine records and gave the original album three of its four stars.
