I'll Take Romance

I'll Take Romance is an album by saxophonist Bud Shank, released on the label World Pacific. The record consists of eleven well-known standards, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Deep Purple to Embraceable You and How Deep Is the Ocean. Shank plays alto saxophone and flute. Some of the tracks were recorded with a backing group of trumpet, horn, saxophones and guitar, the rest with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and pianist Claude Williamson.

What makes this record special is found in Jason Ankeney's review on AllMusic. He heard an album far removed from the sometimes bloodless coolness of the West Coast school and instead warm, as the title promises. He called the string arrangements sweet but never sentimental, with a sensitivity that colours Shank's lyrical alto sax and flute without drowning them out.
