Music for Films
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Music for Films · Brian Eno conceived this album as music for films that did not yet exist. In 1976 a version was released in an edition of five hundred copies, intended for filmmakers who wanted to use excerpts from it. The 1978 release was expanded with pieces from the years 1975 to 1978 and remained intended as a soundtrack for imagined films.
The tracks are short, from a minute and a half to just over four minutes. That differs from the long, drawn-out ambient pieces that came afterwards. Besides synthesizers and found sounds, other musicians play ordinary studio instruments, including Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, John Cale and Phil Collins. The method resembles that of David Bowie's album Low from 1977. Fragments of the album ended up in at least six real films.
