When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling is an album by Bing Crosby of songs with an Irish theme, released by Decca as a 10-inch LP. Some of the tracks had previously appeared on a set of three singles. Later a 12-inch version with the same title and a different selection of tracks was released.
Crosby had Irish ancestors on his mother's side and heard traditional Irish songs as a child. His first Irish recording was Did Your Mother Come from Ireland? in 1940, and from then on Irish songs remained a fixed part of his repertoire. The success of an earlier Irish album led Decca to put together another album in the same vein. It contained two new songs, St. Patrick's Day Parade and With My Shillelagh Under My Arm. Billboard praised the first as a new song of superior quality and found the second somewhat less strong.
