Bing Sings Whilst Bregman Swings
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bing Sings Whilst Bregman Swings was Bing Crosby's sixth LP in 1956 and his first for Verve. It was a break in style: for the first time he recorded an album with an orchestra in the spirit of Frank Sinatra's Songs for Swingin' Lovers. Buddy Bregman came up with the plan, wrote the arrangements and conducted a group of Hollywood musicians. Crosby had never recorded many of the songs before, and his only condition was that he record at nine o'clock in the morning, because his voice was at its best then.
Variety and Billboard were enthusiastic; Time felt that he only sounded old when he tried to swing too high. Producer Ken Barnes praised the choice of songs, such as They All Laughed and Have You Met Miss Jones?, but criticised Bregman's heavy brass arrangements.
