Turnstiles
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Turnstiles is partly a celebration of Joel's return to his home city of New York. The songs were first recorded in Colorado, with members of Elton John's band and producer James William Guercio. Joel was dissatisfied, took over the production and re-recorded the whole album in New York with his own touring band. For the first time that band played on a studio album of his.
Three tracks refer to New York, including New York State of Mind. The opening track Say Goodbye to Hollywood was inspired by Be My Baby by the Ronettes. In Prelude / Angry Young Man, Joel imitates the drums of Wipe Out with fast piano playing. According to AllMusic the success lies in the variety, from the swinging pop song to the barroom number. The album was released in May 1976.
