Music for Torching
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Music for Torching is the fourth studio album by the jazz singer Billie Holiday, a collection of torch songs. It was released in 1955 on Clef Records and was her first 12-inch LP for that label, after four 10-inch LPs. The music was recorded in two sessions in Los Angeles, two days apart. Those sessions also already yielded the material for the follow-up Velvet Mood.
Holiday sings accompanied by a small ensemble: Harry Edison on trumpet, Benny Carter on alto and tenor saxophone, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, John Simmons on bass and Larry Bunker on drums. The repertoire consists of well-known songs by composers such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern, including I Get a Kick Out of You and A Fine Romance.
