Hit the Road Jack
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hit the Road Jack was released in 1976 and is a reggae album by Manley Buchanan of Kingston, Jamaica, better known as Big Youth. The record was made at Randy's in Kingston, with Karl Pitterson and Errol Thompson as engineers. The album consists of ten tracks on which only Big Youth himself is credited as a vocalist.
The choice of well-known songs by others is striking. Buchanan gives a reggae version of What's Going On by Marvin Gaye, of Hit the Road Jack by Percy Mayfield and of Wake Up Everybody, the song by Victor Carstarphen, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead. Get Up, Stand Up by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh is also on the record. The remaining tracks he wrote himself. In 2011 he discussed his version of Hit the Road Jack in an interview for the BBC series Reggae Britannia.
