Laughing on the Outside
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Laughing on the Outside · Aretha Franklin was twenty-one when she made this fourth studio album for Columbia Records. It was released on 12 August 1963 and recorded at Columbia Recording Studios in New York and Hollywood. She sang jazz and pop standards, from Johnny Mercer to Duke Ellington, accompanied by arrangements by Columbia producer Robert Mersey.
One of the best-known songs is her version of Skylark. About two minutes after the start, she sings the word Skylark with power and feeling. On this album she also recorded one of her first own compositions: I Wonder (Where Are You Tonight). The album is somewhat overlooked in her Columbia catalogue. In June 2008 it was reissued, together with The Electrifying Aretha Franklin on a single release.
