Lady Soul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Aretha Franklin released Lady Soul in January 1968 on Atlantic Records. It was her twelfth studio album. Jerry Wexler produced and Tom Dowd engineered it. On several tracks, backing singers join in: Cissy Houston with her group the Sweet Inspirations, and Franklin's sisters Carolyn and Erma. On Good to Me As I Am to You, Eric Clapton can be heard on guitar.

The album contains a number of her biggest hits: Chain of Fools, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone. It spent sixteen weeks at the top of Billboard's R&B albums chart and reached number two on the pop albums chart. It sold more than a million copies in the United States and later appeared in lists of the greatest albums of all time, including those of Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.
