I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You · This 1967 album was the first that Aretha Franklin made for Atlantic Records. At Columbia she had not broken through after eight albums of jazz standards. The title song was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but after a quarrel between her then husband Ted White and studio owner Rick Hall the session broke up. Producer Jerry Wexler continued the recording in New York, where members of the Muscle Shoals rhythm section were also flown in.
The single Respect, an adaptation of a song by Otis Redding, reached number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 and became her trademark. The title song reached the top 10. The album reached number 2 on the American albums chart. The first reactions were mixed, but appreciation later grew enormously. In 2020 Rolling Stone placed it at number 13 among the 500 greatest albums ever.
