High Voltage

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

High Voltage is AC/DC's first album to be released internationally, on 14 May 1976 on Atlantic. It was compiled from the two Australian albums High Voltage and T.N.T. from 1975, the second of which supplied most of the tracks. Producers George Young and Harry Vanda gave the band its sound. Young cut It's a Long Way to the Top down from a long jam and came up with the bagpipes. Singer Bon Scott, in reality a drummer, had to learn the instrument. The oi chant in T.N.T. was also Young's idea.

In the lyrics Scott writes about the good and bad sides of the rock life. Live Wire opened the band's shows for years. In England in 1976 the band was wrongly mistaken for punk. Rolling Stone called the album a low point of hard rock, but in the United States three million copies were sold.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to It's a Long Way to the Top and notice the bagpipes among the guitars. How does that instrument fit a rock song?
