Znamenny chant

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Znamenny chant · When the Kievan Rus' adopted Christianity from Byzantium in 988, Greek church chants came with it. Russian singers made of them a monophonic chant of their own, named after the znamena or kryuki: hook-shaped signs that do not indicate individual notes but melodic turns that the singer knows by heart. The melodies are ordered in eight church modes. After the church reforms of Patriarch Nikon in the seventeenth century, it was above all the Old Believers who preserved this centuries-old chant.

Listening

Listening tip. Ex Libris sings a troparion for the feast of the Trinity in the old znamenny style. All the voices sing one melody together. Where do they stretch a single syllable over a whole series of notes?
