From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Thai piphat · The piphat is the most important ensemble of Thai classical music, related to the Cambodian pinpeat. In the kingdom of Ayutthaya, founded in 1351, melodic percussion instruments such as the xylophone ranat ek and the gong circle khong wong acquired a fixed place. The shawm pi nai plays a richly ornamented melody, while drums and small cymbals keep the beat. Piphat is heard at Buddhist ceremonies and at the masked dance theatre khon.
Listening
Listening tip. Fong Naam opens with Sathukarn, the prayer with which a piphat performance begins. Hear how the instruments play the same melody at the same time, but each in its own way. Which instrument sounds highest and fastest?
