Norwegian Hardanger fiddle

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Norwegian Hardanger fiddle · The Hardanger fiddle is a Norwegian violin with extra sympathetic strings beneath the fingerboard, which vibrate along without the bow touching them. The oldest known one, the Jaastad fiddle of 1651, comes from Ullensvang in Hardanger. Fiddlers played dances there such as the springar, gangar and halling, but also lydarslåttar: pieces to listen to alone. Edvard Grieg was inspired by this music in his Slåttar, Opus 72.

Listening

Listening tip. Knut Buen plays a gangar that goes back to the legendary fiddler Myllarguten. Grieg arranged the same dance for piano. Can you hear a soft resonance sounding along behind the melody? Those are the sympathetic strings.
