Music of Papua New Guinea

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Music of Papua New Guinea · Papua New Guinea has hundreds of languages and at least as many musical styles. The kundu, an hourglass drum with a head of lizard skin, even appears in the national coat of arms. The garamut, a hollowed-out tree trunk, is a slit drum for music and for messages that carry for miles. At a singsing, song, dance, feasting and gifts come together. Among the Kaluli in the rainforest, voices deliberately sing just beside and over one another, like the sounds of the forest.

Listening

Listening tip. Steven Feld recorded this in the rainforest of Bosavi, during the felling of trees for a new garden. Can you hear how voices, working sounds and the forest mingle? Do the voices sing exactly together, or just beside and over one another?
