Cantu a tenore
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Cantu a tenore · In the villages of Barbagia, in the interior of Sardinia, four men sing the centuries-old cantu a tenore in a small circle. The soloist, the boche, sings the text: epic, satirical or love poetry. The other three, bassu, contra and mesu boche, sing sounds without words. Bassu and contra use a throat technique with a raw, buzzing sound. According to tradition the bassu imitates a cow, the contra a sheep and the mesu boche the wind.
Listening
Listening tip. Tenores di Bitti sing a cantu a ballu, music to dance to. Listen to the low voices beneath the soloist: what does the raw throat sound of the bassu sound like, and can you hear the contra just above it?
