Yung Joc
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Yung Joc is the stage name of Jasiel Amon Robinson, a rapper from Atlanta, born in 1980. His father had a business in hair care products and helped him get the chance to write a jingle for Revlon. He then started his own label, Mastermind, to release his music. In 2005 he met the Atlanta producer Nitti Beatz, with whom he recorded the hit It's Goin' Down in the spring. Through Russell Block Spencer of Block Entertainment he came to Bad Boy South, the label of Sean Combs.
Music and breakthrough
It's Goin' Down reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006 and appeared on his debut album New Joc City. That also included I Know U See It. His second album Hustlenomics followed in 2007, with, among others, Coffee Shop and Bottle Poppin'. Both records reached number 3 on the Billboard 200. He was also heard as a guest rapper: on T-Pain's Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin'), which became number 1 in 2007, on Danity Kane's Show Stopper and on tracks by David Banner and Bobby V.
Influence
Yung Joc is one of the Atlanta rappers who brought Southern hip hop to the general public in the mid-2000s. His style is loose and melodic, with laid-back, danceable beats and a sing-song delivery that suits guest appearances on pop records well. After a lawsuit over royalties he founded his own label in 2008, Swagg Team Entertainment. Later he also became known as a television personality in the series Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.
