Musica Antiqua Köln

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Musica Antiqua Köln was a German early music ensemble, founded in 1973 by Reinhard Goebel and fellow students from the conservatory in Cologne. The ensemble devoted itself mainly to music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, played according to the performance practice of the time. After more than thirty years of tours, recordings and concerts the group was disbanded in 2007. Goebel then focused on conducting larger orchestras, in both early and modern repertoire.

Music and breakthrough

The group made many recordings for the label Archiv Produktion, which belongs to Deutsche Grammophon, and received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix International du Disque, the Gramophone Award and the Diapason d'Or, as well as Grammy nominations. The records include Bach's Das Musikalische Opfer BWV 1079 and Die Kunst der Fuge BWV 1080, Handel's Wassermusik, Flötenkonzerte and Deutsche Kammermusik vor Bach, and also Monteverdi's Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. The group made its last recording for Archiv, Telemann's Flute Quartets of 2005, with the recorder player Maurice Steger.

Influence

Many people know the ensemble from the soundtrack of the film Le Roi Danse, about the life and music of the court composer Jean-Baptiste Lully. In this way the group brought to life Baroque music, which to the general public sometimes seemed dusty, with a sharp, lively sound.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a movement from Die Kunst der Fuge BWV 1080 and notice how different voices take up the same theme one after another and keep an eye on one another.
