Munir Bashir
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Munir Bashir received his first oud lessons in Mosul from his father and brother, studied at the conservatory of Baghdad and later gained his doctorate in Budapest. He was the first great oud player to give entire concerts alone, with taqsim: free improvisations in a maqam, the Arabic system of modes. He used harmonics and a tuning of his own. On his album for the French label Ocora, each piece is such a taqsim in a different maqam.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the taqsim in maqam Nahawand: Bashir plays short motifs, lets silences fall and so slowly builds up a melody.
