Louis & Bebe Barron

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Louis & Bebe Barron · Louis and Bebe Barron were a married couple with their own electronic studio in New York. There they experimented with tape recorders and home-built circuits. They also worked on tape pieces by John Cage. Louis built electronic circuits that made sounds until they burned out. Bebe and he recorded these and processed them with reverb, echo, filters and tape manipulation. With this technique they made the soundtrack for Forbidden Planet (1956) for MGM. It was the first fully electronic film score, years before the synthesizers of Moog and Buchla. Because they were not members of the musicians' union, their work was credited as 'electronic tonalities' and could not compete for an Oscar.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice that no ordinary instruments sound: only glowing, gliding and pulsing electronic sounds that sit somewhere between music and sound effect.
