Javier Perianes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Javier Perianes is a Spanish classical pianist, born on 24 September 1978 in Nerva. He plays at well-known festivals in Spain, such as Santander, Granada, Peralada and San Sebastián, and in concert series around the world, including at Carnegie Hall in New York. He often won prizes at competitions, including first prize and the gold medal at the forty-second Premio Jaén de Piano and first prize at the eighth piano competition of the Fundación Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero. He was also a prizewinner at the Vianna da Motta in Lisbon.

Music and breakthrough

He has worked with leading conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jesús López Cobos, Antoni Wit, Daniel Harding and Vasily Petrenko. His recordings for Harmonia Mundi were praised, including Schubert's Impromptus and Klavierstücke, sonatas by Manuel Blasco de Nebra and Música callada by Federico Mompou. In September 2011 an album of piano music by Manuel de Falla appeared on the same label. In 2015 he recorded Grieg's Piano Concerto, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo, with a selection from Grieg's Lyric Pieces.

Influence

A reviewer for the Sunday Telegraph called him a natural Schubert player who let his playing sound beautiful. Perianes brings together Spanish and international piano music, from Mompou and De Falla to Schubert, Brahms and Debussy, and in doing so showed that the Spanish piano tradition has a broad place in concert life. His later albums include Scarlatti and work from Goyescas.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Schubert's Impromptus in his recording and notice the singing melody in the right hand: how softly does he play, and where does he let the tone ring out for a moment?
