Jamai Loman

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jamai Loman is a Dutch singer, musical actor and presenter. He was born on 30 June 1986 and grew up in Schoonhoven, with his parents and two older sisters. His artistic path began with a school musical. In 2000 he performed at his school's Shownight and he was in the school jazz band 8CC. In 2003 he took part in Idols, the Dutch version of Pop Idol, and to his own surprise won the first series. At the World Idol of 2003 he received only thirty-six points and finished last, with a critical assessment from the jury.

Music and breakthrough

After his third single he chose the stage over the record industry. He appeared in musicals such as Doornroosje, Hello, Dolly! and Jesus Christ Superstar. In January 2007 he took on the role of the Wiz and alternated as the Scarecrow in the musical The Wiz. In 2008 he played Marius in the Dutch revival of Les Misérables, and he received a John Kraaijkamp Musical Award for best supporting role in a major musical for it. In 2009 he appeared in Urinetown by M-Lab.

Influence

Later he became a television personality. From 2016 he was on the jury of Idols. In 2021 he won the third series of The Masked Singer as Cupid, in 2022 he co-presented Lego Masters, and in February 2026 he won the final of the programme Maestro. Loman showed that a talent contest could be a stepping stone to a broad career on stage and television, even though his pop career was short.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to his recordings from Idols and then to a musical excerpt with his voice. Notice the difference: where does the voice sound like a pop singer, and where like an actor telling a story?
