Hildegard von Bingen
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Hildegard von Bingen was abbess of the convent of Rupertsberg on the Rhine, and also a writer, healer and visionary. For her sisters she wrote the words and music of more than seventy chants, with melodies that reach much higher and wider than ordinary Gregorian chant. Her Ordo Virtutum of around 1151 is a sung play in which the virtues fight for a human soul. She is one of the first composers of whom we know both the name and the work.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the single voice in Columba aspexit and hear how the melody shoots upward in large leaps, much further than in ordinary Gregorian chant.
