Heitor Villa-Lobos

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

As a young man, Heitor Villa-Lobos played cello and guitar in orchestras in Rio and spent time with the chorões, the street musicians of choro. He worked that music into his classical output: in the 1920s he wrote a series of Chôros. In the Bachianas Brasileiras he joined Bach with Brazilian melodies. The fifth, for soprano and eight cellos, became his best-known work.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5: eight cellos pluck like guitars, and the soprano sings a long, wordless melody above them.
